Debut "Radio Serenity" offers world music with politically engaged lyrics!
SPRENGLER: Ex-singer of Germany's ska pioneers The Busters for the first time on solo paths
(thk) Markus Sprengler made himself a name as the strong voice of The Busters. He, who sang from 1994 to 2002 with one of the most famous and internationally successful pioneers of the German ska scene, now presents his solo debut live: "Radio Serenity" (Fizz-Records/www.sprengler.com). The album, which appears simply under his surname SPRENGLER, is conceived as a moderated radio broadcast. The 17 tracks (+ two bonus tracks and two remixes) stylistically offer a melange of Reggae, Ska, Worldbeats and Global-Pop plus dedicated lyrics. They revolve around current historical themes such as the refugee crisis or the price of freedom. In order to guarantee maximum authenticity, parts of the CD were recorded with local musicians in Zambia, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Barbados and Jamaica. They were completed in local studios. The basic idea for the entire production was provided by Sprengler's commitment to the aid organization 'Spine Alliance' and his travels to the Caribbean and Africa.
Bob Marley, The Specials and Madness are among the early musical idols of the native of Kaiserslautern (* 9 October 1965). He also indulged his preferences with The Busters, performed with them at the "Montreux Jazz Festival" and at the "Rockpalast", and toured with "Die Ärzte". After 500 concerts and six albums, it was the end of the ska pioneers and time for something new. Spengler became the first pop and rock representative of the city of Mannheim and co-initiator of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg, where he taught vocal and band coaching. In the following years he sang again and again with musicians from Xavier Naidoo, Grönemeyer, Westernhagen or Nena and opened the "Supermercato" in 2002. This special supermercato is a 'fun-oriented patchwork-grown-up-groove project' of his different sound influences, conceived as an (all-star) band. Participants are Joo Kraus (Ex-Tab Two, -Kraan), Cappuccino (Jazzkantine), Adax Dörsam (e.g. DePhazz) or the "Radio Serenity"-producer Pit Schönpflug as well as various artists from Guyana, Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago. In 2017, Sprengler, who now works as an independent cultural manager, will be operating under his own name for the first time. He has, however, remained true to his old music preferences, even though this time the focus is clearly on old music. In harmony with meaningful lyrics, this results in "Radio Serenity" - a radio programme of a different kind, which promises serenity in its title, but is also a very special one!
